Pico had the great pleasure of activating a full range of services for a sensational, one-of-a-kind exhibition. The “1600 Pandas World Tour in Hong Kong: Creativity Meets Conservation” brought a serious conservation message to life in a fresh new way – by using 1,600 papier-mâché pandas!
Initiated by WWF and created by French artist Paulo Grangeon in 2008, each individual panda was created entirely from recycled materials. For the last six years, these extremely cute and cuddly pandas have been touring the world with a serious message to get across: drawing attention a 2004 survey determining that only 1,600 pandas remain in the wild.
Taking place at the newly-restored Police Married Quarters building, reborn as the “PMQ” creative hub after two years of renovations, the exhibition ran for a three-week period from late June to mid-July 2014.
The pandas landed in Hong Kong on 9 June and surprised everyone with a series of ‘black and white flashmobs’ at 10 Hong Kong landmarks before arriving at PMQ. Pico TBA provided a full range of public engagement and exhibition activation services for the pandas. Our turnkey solutions included management and show production for the PMQ Opening Ceremony – officiated by Hong Kong’s Chief Executive – and the Panda Kick-Off Ceremony. Planning services include online registration, customer service, logistics planning, and temp staff management and training for the entire exhibition period.
Pico are also providing ‘TLC’ services to the pandas themselves – giving them tender loving care, keeping them safe at night and setting them up again every morning in the ‘Hug Hug Panda Zone’, where visitors can take photos with these adorable icons of conservation. Given the recent rainy weather in Hong Kong, keeping the pandas safe and dry has been a non-stop challenge for our teams, but certainly a rewarding one.
This event is certainly successfully putting the new PMQ on the map, and more importantly, raising public awareness of the need to preserve this endangered species.
