Thailand Pavilion at Vancouver World Expo 1986

Studio 54, Pico Art's associate in Thailand, provided local design services for Thailand's pavilion at Expo 86. Following the Expo's theme of Transportation and Communication, The Tahi pavilion focused on sea, air and road transportation within a historic context. Unique and precious artifacts such as the Supannahong boat and the Garuda sculpture were displayed to illustrate how transportation was accommodated and perceived in ancient times. Images of the communication and transportation system found in Thailand today were juxtaposed with the historical artifacts to show the adaptation of this subject over time. Video presentations also describe ancient means of communication, history and Thai culture which were used in monarchial ceremony. Thailand's rich cultural and artistic background was expressed on the outside of the pavilion as well. The exterior mural depicted the indigenous architectural structure, Sala, and the exotic atmosphere which permeates this country. A full-scale replica of the famous demon sculpture which guards the Wat Phra Keo or Grand Palace greeted the visitors and likewise. 'watched over' the pavilion activities.
